Geipel Brewing
Founded in 2013, Geipel Brewing in Llangwm, North Wales is a microbrewery specialising in bottom-fermented beers, more commonly known as lagers.
When Erik Geipel startet brewing, he was interested in traditional German brewing methods using steam.
CERTUSS supplied Erik with a 120 kg/hr SC Light Oil Steam Generator, which has now been installed for over 10 years.
Owner Erik Geipel about working with CERTUSS
"When I first got started, I knew nothing about steam systems, but I knew that I wanted to use one for for brewing proper lagers. The way they do them in Germany."
"Brewers in Germany ... were one of the first ones I contacted ... and they proposed a system which I went with. And it has ended up working out quite well."
"We're in a very remote rural location. So the size and weight of the system had to be fairly reasonable to get it here and to be able to use it properly."
"Since I knew nothing about steam systems myself, it was really important to me that there were local support available. So I needed to be able to call somebody when something went wrong. And the guys at CERTUSS were very helpful with that and they've helped me over the years."
"We use steam for firing the brew kettle, of course. But we also heat hot water with it. And we also sterilise our kegs with it, but that said, it's not on all the time. So we have to frequently turn it off and turn it back on again. That's one of the advantages of a steam generator like the CERTUSS model. It can be started fairly quickly. Within 5 to 10 minutes of turning it on, you've got proper steam to heat and to work with."
"Here we've been using steam for 10 years now. My original decision to use steam was based on brewing lagers the proper way. The way they would in Germany. I think that approach has been validated as we recently won a gold medal at the annual Keg Awards for Pilsner, which is of course brewed in the traditional German way."
